A Tribute To Jean Work

This past Spring, G.A.I.T. lost a remarkable woman and wonderful therapeutic riding instructor, Jean (Jeanie) Work, to cancer.

Jeanie and SkyeJeanie was a NARHA Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor. She began volunteering at G.A.I.T. in the autumn of 2003 after researching many charities in the area. She chose G.A.I.T. because of her extensive background in horses and her strong desire to help physically and mentally challenged persons.

Her experience included managing a 50-horse stable in Basking Ridge, New Jersey from 1972 to 1977. She was also a New York State licensed message therapist. She brought those experiences to G.A.I.T. when she became a Board Member in 2004. She served on the Board as President and Treasurer. She became a NARHA Registered Instructor in 2006 and taught therapeutic riding for G.A.I.T. until 2008 when she became too ill to teach. Jeanie’s last ride was in February 2009 on her beloved G.A.I.T. horse, October Skye.

Jeanie was well loved at G.A.I.T. by staff, riders, volunteers and Board Members. She tirelessly brought new riders to G.A.I.T. , successfully held fundraisers for G.A.I.T. and taught classes on her days off from her business, “Work’s Frame Shop”.

The “Jean Work Scholarship Fund” was established by Wendy Kaplan to sponsor riders with limited finances to attend G.A.I.T. ’s Therapeutic Riding classes. We know this would have made Jeanie proud and very happy. Jeanie’s family and friends are very happy that Jeanie’s memory will live on at G.A.I.T. through this scholarship.

If you would like to donate to the “Jean Work Scholarship Fund”, please mail a check to G.A.I.T. Place “Jean Work Scholarship Fund” on the memo portion of your check.
