Susan Swalm is G.A.I.T.'s Activities Program Coordinator. She works with G.A.I.T.'s NARHA-Certified Instructors to continually develop this off-horse program. This program contains indoor and outdoor activities that gives riders additional time to learn about their horses. It seeks to reinforce riding and arena activities. Additionally, this program develops physical, social and emotional skills of the riders who attend G.A.I.T. Ms. Swalm researched the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets and PA Academic Standards and used them as guides to write The Fun Book Series. This series is used to plan and execute off-horse activities that correspond to on-horse riding classes. These books help riders to learn the names and colors of G.A.I.T.'s horses, to learn the different parts of a horse, to learn the senses of a horse, to learn and understand the care of a horse, and to know the seasons of a horse. Riders do not have to be readers to participate! Another aspect of G.A.I.T.'s off-horse activities program, is helping riders move through the narrow path of G.A.I.T.'s newly built labyrinth. Studies have shown that moving through the narrow path of a labyrinth helps calm the person and "quiet the mind". G.A.I.T. is fortunate to have Ms. Swalm as our Activities Program Coordinator. ** A special "thank you" to the Coakley Family for donating the materials and then donating their time to build this fabulous labyrinth for all G.A.I.T. riders to enjoy! ** |
